Larry Page is the man who had a dream that the internet could be downloaded and saved as links so websites could be more quickly accessed. This was the dream from which Google was born. In addition to being the co-founder of Google, Page has also won awards such as the Marconi Prize and TR100 (Google). Though he recently landed #29 on Forbes Youngest Billionaires of 2013 list, perhaps it’s even more notable that he holds a 93% employee approval rating on Glassdoor and is #5 on Glassdoor’s annual 50 Highest Rates CEOs list. If successfully managing Google, which ranks #55 on the Fortune 500 list and keeping employees happy isn’t a sign of great leadership, what is?

Talk about the future

In 2005, Larry Page told University of Michigan’s engineering graduates to “talk about the future.” It isn’t the only time Page has tackled that topic. He frequently champions the importance of innovation. “Lots of companies don’t succeed over time. What do they fundamentally do wrong? They usually miss the future” Page once said (Brainy Quote). Like Steve Jobs and many great leaders, Larry Page recognizes the importance of embracing crazy ideas and sorting out the ones worth chasing.

Empower others

Larry Page is not a leader who has missed the boat on the concept of helping and empowering employees in order to help the business. He words his feelings on this well “My job as a leader is to make sure everybody in the company has great opportunities, and that they feel they’re having a meaningful impact and are contributing to the good of society. As a world, we’re doing a better job of that. My goal is for Google to lead, not follow that” (Brainy Quote).

Persevere

“Rome wasn’t built in a day” is what they say, and neither was Google. According to one CNN article “It took Page some six years to get staff to work on Google’s book digitization project. He came up with the idea when he and Brin were students at Stanford, and the first books were scanned in 2004.” It also took several years to convince others to join his Google Maps with street view effort, much less launch it (CNN). Moving forward he acknowledges “The ultimate search engine would basically understand everything in the world, and it would always give you the right thing. And we’re a long, long ways from that” (Brainy Quote). However, despite the time it takes to achieve big goals, Page perseveres because he wants to make a difference.

 

Larry Page has room to grow, like every leader. But overall, he’s got some pretty valuable traits when it comes to innovation, strengthening a team and staying productive. If his accomplishments and leadership qualities aren’t inspirational for growing leaders, what is?

Virginia Marie “Ginni” Rometty has been at IBM since 1981 and now acts as Chairwoman and CEO for the company. IBM is number four on the “World’s Most Valuable Brands” list and employs 466,995 people (Forbes). Managing one of the world’s largest workforces isn’t easy, but Ginni gets it done. She has been on Fortune magazine’s “50 Most Powerful Women in Business” list for eight years, ranking number one in 2012. Forbes ranked her number fifteen on their “World’s 100 Most Powerful Women” list (Wikipedia). She has certainly carved her place as a top performer in the modern business world. In studying her leadership style, there are three consistently noticeable qualities that have enabled her growth as a leader and her success.

Leadership Qualities of Ginni Rometty

She Takes Risks

Individuals like Ginni who find themselves in charge of a Fortune 500 company are not so different from small business owners or even entry-level professionals in some ways. For example, all professionals face important decisions that are often scary or highly unpredictable. This leads to deciding whether or not to take a risk. If Ginni Rometty can teach us something about leadership, it’s that risk-taking is important to success. In an interview, she explained that growth and comfort don’t usually coexist. Like many remarkable leaders, Ginni knows that the way to grow is to try new things and push through new challenges.

She Aligns Her Workforce

Despite IBM’s size, it would seem the organization has a handle on aligning and motivating employees. And the company could have a higher employee review score on Glassdoor, but its approximate $16 billion profit for the previous year speaks to the dedication of success of the human capital. When asked how she keeps employees aligned, Ginni explained that she carves out a few long-term strategic beliefs around which employees can jointly focus. She explained that this instills in employees that they’re coming to work for a higher purpose and a common overall goal. For example, IBM is currently focused on the belief that Cognitive Computing is the next era for computer technology, which could make a vital positive impact on the medical community, among other industries. The company also utilizes social business. She compared social business to social media; an internal communication method for employees to discuss ideas (Fortune Interview).

She Knows That Actions Speak Louder Than Words

Ginni likes to share a story about how her single mother made a huge impact on her through actions rather than words. Her mother went to night classes and worked to take care of their family. Ginni says there were three important things she learned from watching her mother. The first is that actions speak louder than words, the second is that nothing is insurmountable, and the third is to define one’s self, rather than being defined by others. Now Ginni always remembers she doesn’t have to say her beliefs, she has to live them (Fortune Interview). One of the ways her actions have spoken louder than her words is when she declined her performance bonus from IBM. “Equilar’s Boyd says when a CEO declines a bonus, it’s a way of demonstrating to shareholders that they’re focused on setting the company up for success. ‘They’re not just dying to get the money without thinking about the health and well-being of the company and its shareholders’” (Washington Post).

Ginni has said “when you don’t believe in the inevitable, it means you don’t expect that that’s how things have to turn out. You can change them.”Perhaps that is one of the most meaningful quotes for leaders everywhere. Nothing is set in stone and there is room for change and improvement around every corner. Like Ginni, leaders who take the time to grow, align others for success and let their actions speak louder than their words are on a track for success.

Management Monday: Avoiding Leadership Burnout

Managers and leaders have opportunities to influence and inspire others around them, or to drag the atmosphere down. They have chances to positively influence the trajectory of their organization, or to set a tone that will lead to failure. It sounds like a lot of responsibility, which doesn’t make the task of successful leadership any easier. In a turbulent economy, it’s not uncommon for leaders to feel like it’s only a matter of time before they’re burned in the frying pan. History certainly has shown that executives and leaders can succumb to the challenges of their post resulting in unfortunate outcomes.

For leaders looking to avoid breaking under the stress, the trick is to continually motivate and monitor themselves. Is that easy? Not always. However, it’s certainly effective and worth doing. The tips below are often successful in helping executives and leaders of all sorts avoid burnout.

Tips to Avoid Burnout:

1)      Analyze primary tasks for job, and cut frills out or delegate

2)      If being handed too much work, privately and optimistically discuss situation with boss

3)      When bored in position, ask what more you can do to contribute to the company

4)      Make sure your values and goals align with those of the company

5)      Evaluate productivity and utilize tips to improve

6)      Try to reinforce your efforts with positive self-talk

7)      Make sure to get healthy amounts of sleep and exercise

8)      Eat healthy foods to maintain energy

9)      Do something nice for others frequently to boost your mood and happiness

10)   Take steps to establish a healthy work life balance routine

The tips above help combat common causes of leadership burnout such as an understaffed workforce, martyr mindset, internal conflicts, lack of leadership coaching available and unhealthy work culture (Psychology Today). Like the CEO of GE, who can’t finish his 20 year leadership run as planned due to burnout, all leaders are susceptible to burnout (Wall Street Journal). On the flip side, every leader has the opportunity to utilize the tips above as well as seek executive training in order to succeed.

Anne M. Mulcahy was chairperson and CEO of Xerox Corporation beginning in 2001 and 2002. She has also been a member of the boards of directors of Catalyst, Citigroup Inc., Fuji Xerox Co. Ltd. and Target Corporation (Wikipedia). Named ‘CEO of the Year 2008’ by Chief Executive magazine, Anne proved she could offer something special as a leader in the business world. Anne took on her leadership role at Xerox at a turbulent time for the company, but she was determined to make the best of it. A few key qualities enabled her to lead the company.

In a turbulent economy, it’s hard to find loyal employees, much less dedicated leaders. However, Anne was a 25 year Xerox veteran when she stepped into the CEO shoes. And despite the fact that the company was near bankruptcy, she committed to make changes and tough decisions to get it back on track (US News). In hard times, loyalty can be the most valuable quality of a leader.

Reinvention

Shifting from expensive consumer printers, Anne took a gamble and focused on the new technology of high end color digital printers and consulting services. She realized that the world was changing and Xerox needed to get ahead of the shift. “Companies disappear because they can’t reinvent themselves,” she said (US News).

Valuing People

Even when Anne had to cut jobs and sell divisions to get the company on track, she still strove to value company culture (WTTW11). She once said “Employees are a company’s greatest asset – they’re your competitive advantage. You want to attract and retain the best; provide them with encouragement, stimulus, and make them feel that they are an integral part of the company’s mission (Brainy Quote).”

 

By the time Anne left Xerox in 2010, the company was rejuvenated and successful. This was because Anne had the loyalty to see it through, she was willing to take risks in innovation and she was wise enough to focus on human capital through talent development.

Widely considered the father of hip-hop, Russell Simmons embodies those qualities. He co-founded Def Jam Records, which has signed artists like the Beastie Boys, LL Cool J, Public Enemy and Run-D.M.C. He later banked $100 million by selling Def Jam to Universal Music Group (Biography). He didn’t stop there. In addition to founding companies like Phat Farm, Argyleculture, and American Classics, Russell Simmons is also a successful author, most famously known for Do You!: 12 Laws to Access the Power in You to Achieve Happiness and Success. An igniter of a musical genre, a business founder and a successful author, Russell Simmons is a leader who can teach the world a thing or two.

Leader Qualities of Russell Simmons:

  1. Emotional Intelligence – There is no doubt that Simmons has strong emotional intelligence. When he speaks about working with artists and executives, he emphasizes the importance of making sure everyone is happy in a deal (Harvard Business Review). In addition, when asked about his business success, Simmons has explained that he founds businesses based on existing needs. He is able to fill these needs by being attuned to them in the first place, which is an indicator of emotional intelligence.
  2. Positive Attitude – Simmons has advocated that a positive attitude, passion and openness to wealth – both spiritual and material – are some of the qualities needed for entrepreneurial success (CNN). His positive attitude is certainly transparent in his interviews and historically. When asked about his success working with artists, he explains “People want to write for us because we’re positive.” (Entrepreneur).
  3. Team Value – It’s not uncommon for a leader to feel like they’re on a solo mission, or like they can’t trust others to get the job done. Simmons doesn’t have that problem. He repeatedly mentions how fortunate he is to work with creative and talented people. One of his popular quotes goes like this “Surround yourself with people who are smarter than you” (Brainy Quote). The ability to recognize team value is typically found in impactful leaders, and Simmons is no different.

Every potential future Russell Simmons would do well to keep these qualities in mind as they move through life. It takes being aware of emotions, understanding the needs of others, a positive attitude and an appreciation for teams to be a successful leader.
